Sudden Oak Death

Our firewood comes from locations that have not been infected with Sudden Oak Death so our wood does not contain the fungus. Sudden Oak Death is a fungus (Phytophthora ramorum) that has been found in several California counties including Southern Humboldt and Curry County in southwest Oregon. This pathogen is currently having a major impact on some Oregon and California forests killing millions of tanoaks and live oaks as well as having an impact on nurseries.

Sudden Oak Death causes mortality in the following speces:

tanoak (Lithocarpus densiflorus)
California black oak (Quercus kelloggii)
coast live oak. (Quercus agrifolia)

Other trees and nursery shrubs may host the pathogen causing leaf spot and twig dieback. These include:

Rhododendron
huckleberry (Vaccinium ovatum)
bay laurel, pepperwood, myrtlewood (Umbellularia californica)
madrone or madrona (Arbutus menziesii)
bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum)
manzanita (Arctostaphylos manzanita)
California buckeye (Aesculus californica)
