i have been reading online about wood fired hot water heaters and was
wondering if anyone here has any experience with them. i have a cabin
in a rural area in michigan off the grid that we use as a vacation home.
i have plenty of wood available there and i an also considering a
solar hot water heater or maybe a combination of the 2 to replace the
existing propane water heater. i like the idea of using wood because it
grows on the place and it doesn't cost anything. if anyone has any
experience with these or if you can tell me which one is the best or
where best to get one i would appreciate it.

We have a wood fired water heater in our remote cabin and it works
great. It uses very little wood, we actually use the chips and slivers
of wood that are produced by the wood splitter to fire it and it only
takes a few. After 15-20 minutes the water is hot enough for at least 2
showers and enough left to wash the dishes. I don't know the name of
the manufacturer and I won't be out there for a while to check. I don't
think they are in business any more anyway. For occasional use or as
an emergency backup it works great but for every day use in your
residence I think it would get to be too much of an inconvenience. I
think they have some that have to option to use both wood and oil and
maybe even gas now.

I have heard of outdoor boilers that heat water and you can use it for
hot water and to heat your home. I have never used one but it's an
interesting idea and something you might look into.
