A prescribed burn is where foresters intentionally set fire to a forest when conditions are just right to prevent a fire from burning too hot.  Such conditions would be during a cool time of the year when moisture levels and humidity are high.  Sometimes a fire is prescribed after a mechanical thinning has reduced the fuel load.
